Why we list it

Desa Seni is a different kind of Bali retreat. The property is made from twelve authentic antique Javanese houses — timber structures sourced from villages across Java, dismantled, transported, and rebuilt on a rice-field site in Canggu. Each house is different. The effect is not a resort pretending to be a village, but an actual collection of old buildings arranged in a new way. The architectural integrity is unusual and the atmosphere it creates is genuinely warm rather than designed.

Canggu vs Ubud

Canggu is Bali’s other yoga hub — hipper, closer to the coast, more surf-influenced, and considerably less crowded than central Ubud has become. Desa Seni sits between Canggu’s beach culture and the older, quieter rice-field villages to the east. You can walk to the beach, eat at internationally excellent restaurants, and return to a property that feels far removed from the surf school noise.

For women who want Bali’s yoga culture without committing to Ubud’s full immersion, Canggu is the better base and Desa Seni is the best yoga accommodation in it.

The practice

Morning sessions are vinyasa-based — dynamic, breath-led, sequenced by resident teachers who’ve worked at the property for years and know the guest population well (international, mid-level experience, mixed nationalities). Evening sessions are restorative: slower, bolster-supported, designed to close the day. The open-sided shala overlooks the rice fields directly — the view during morning practice, as the mist rises and the farmers begin work, is what most guests photograph.

The organic kitchen

The restaurant is one of Desa Seni’s genuine strengths. The kitchen grows produce on-site where possible and sources the rest from certified organic Balinese farms. The cooking class (included mid-week) teaches the principles of Balinese Ayurvedic cooking — jamu (herbal tonics), base genep (spice paste), and traditional preparation methods.

Our take

Desa Seni offers something rare: a property where the architecture, the food, the teaching, and the location are all genuinely good. Nothing is best-in-class but everything is excellent, and the whole is significantly more than the sum of its parts. We list it for women who want Bali’s yoga culture with taste and coherence.

Pricing note

$950–1,400/person for a full week with accommodation, most meals, daily yoga, and a massage is fair value for Canggu. The spread reflects villa size and room configuration.
